October 31- November 4My name is Jim DeBetta and I am the Committee Chairperson for the Red Ribbon Week activities that will run from October 31, 2016 through November 4, 2016. For one week each year, schools across America focus on educating students of all ages about healthy choices – especially the choice to avoid drugs. Although our children at Mountain View Elementary School are still young, educators stress the importance of delivering important yet fun messages to create awareness at any early age. My goal is to keep the message as simple and lighthearted as possible so that the children have fun and still get a sense that drugs are bad without getting into great detail. It is ultimately up to parents to discuss this sensitive subject with their children in whatever manner they see fit.
I have outlined a theme for each day of the week. Please be sure to add this information to your blog and on Remind 101 for parents to see. The parents are getting a separate letter via the lead room rep which will outline the events for the week for the parents and what the children need to do each day. If you can also encourage them to participate in the daily events it would be greatly appreciated! The outline for the week is as follows: This year's theme: "WE ARE NOT AFRAID TO SAY NO TO DRUGS!" Mon Oct 31 – Black Out Drugs – Have your child wear black clothing to school. Tues Nov 1 – Team Up Against Drugs – Have your child wear a team jersey, shirt, or sweatshirt to school (professional, college, or local sports teams they participate in.) Wed Nov 2 – Shade Out Drugs! – Wear your coolest sunglasses to school! If you don’t have any, see if mom or dad has an old pair you can wear! Thurs Nov 3 – Wear Red Day – Have your child wear red clothing to school. Everything from red socks to red shirts…whatever you have! Fri Nov 4 – Food Drive/Turn Your Back On Drugs – HELP THOSE IN NEED - HAVE YOUR CHILD BRING IN A FEW CANNED FOODS OR OTHER NON-PERISHABLE FOOD ITEMS. THESE ITEMS WILL GO TO SELECTED LOCAL CHARITIES SUCH AS MUST MINISTRIES THAT ASSIST THOSE WHO ARE EXPERIENCING HARDSHIP AS WE APPROACH THE HOLIDAY SEASON. PLEASE HAVE YOUR CHILD DROP OFF THE CANNED GOODS AND NON-PERISHABLE ITEMS IN THE BOXES OR BARRELS PROVIDED NEAR THE CAFETERIA ENTRANCE. Also, have your child wear their shirt/sweatshirts backwards to school! If you have any questions about Red Ribbon Week please feel free to contact me at 770-880-2606 or by email at [email protected]. We look forward to a fun week and thank you in advance for your support! Jim DeBetta
